Vermio Mountain

The highest peak of Vermio Mountain is just over 2,000 meters. The slopes, especially the eastern ones, are full of fir, oak and chestnut trees. A rare species of crocus (Crocus Cviziciii) grows in the high meadows of Vermio in the spring. In the summer the landscape is absolutely mesmerizing due to the colorful “carpet” of wildflowers, cyclamens, lilies, wild roses, and the unique in the world Isatis vermia. Also, on the slopes of the mountain there are foxes, deer, wild boars, other smaller mammals, reptiles, insects, and many birds.

The “gentleness” of the slopes, the dense vegetation and its proximity to the cities of Imathia have made Vermio a popular hiking destination. There are over 70 kilometers of hiking paths on the mountain and the best season for trekking is certainly spring.

There are four mountain refuges on the slopes of the mountain. Two of them are at Seli, at an altitude of 1,450 to 1,500 meters and can host up to 75 and 117 people respectively. The first belongs to ΕΟΣ Thessaloniki (2310 278288) and the second in the ΣΧΟ Veria (23310 26970 & 49297). The other two shelters are located at Tria – Pente  Pigadia, at an altitude of about 1,450 meters and can host up to 30 and 85 people respectively.
